23rd October 2014

YMCA East London’s (FYMCA) resident football team have been nominated for the award of Club of the Year at the London Borough of Waltham Forest’s (LBWF) Celebrating Sports Awards 2014, on Thursday 13th November 2014.

The awards, which will be held at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, recognise and reward local organisations and individuals who have contributed towards sporting activities across the borough. Awarding categories include; Volunteer of the Year, Sports Person of the Year and Outstanding Team Contribution London Youth Games 2014.

Darren Johnson, Assistant Leisure and Fitness Manager and FYMCA football team coach, said, “The team are absolutely ecstatic. Being a part of the YMCA East London football team has played a vital role their development; they have come a very long way in their personal journeys. We would like to thank everyone that nominated the team, we are so proud of them and hope that they win this special accolade, they truly deserve it.”

Marcello, FYMCA football team member and YMCA East London resident, said, “When we found out that we’d been nominated for the award we were all shocked to know that people actually value our contribution to sports in the area. This is really encouraging for us and whether or not we win, our achievements as a team have been highlighted and that means a lot to us.”

The YMCA East London football team was set up in 2013, and is generously supported by Kind & Co who sponsor their football kit. Playing in the team has proved a positive outlet for the members, who through the support of YMCA East London are overcoming the issues associated with homelessness.

Since joining the team each player has received a Football Association (FA) Level 1 certificate in football coaching and they are being given the opportunity to complete the Sport Wise Level 2 Fitness Instructor course at YMCA East London. The team have worked equally as hard on the pitch, recently finishing fourth place in the London Communities Football League. They are currently in training to enter the second season of the League.
