What do you like best about working for us?
The variety of my day to day tasks and it’s rewarding when we manage to resettle someone. I like knowing I’m doing something to help local people and the community.
Describe a typical day in the life of an RSA Manager
Very busy, there is no typical day. Often, I meet with residents to talk about their resettlement. Many have come from difficult backgrounds – we have refugee residents who have fled religious or political persecutions and others who have experienced family breakdown, mental health issues or drug or alcohol problems. All of our residents are affected by rising rents and the increasing cost of living in London which impacts their ability to find and maintain affordable housing. I also view properties with residents, oversee licence fee accounts and I talk to the Supported Housing Officers about support issues.
What do you think about the learning and development opportunities offered in YMCA EL?
In my 5 years here, I’ve had opportunity to develop a lot. I started off as a Supported Housing Assistant and am now a manager. I’ve done on the job training and learning from other managers. The organisation offers a great variety of internal training too.
Name a couple of things you have on your ‘Things I must do before…. list’
I’d like to live in a different country at some point in each decade of my life. I learnt Spanish when I lived in Argentina for a year in my early 20s – I’m thinking Spain would be nice for my next decade. I’d also love to go to Cuba before it becomes too commercialised.
If you had the means and resources to invent a gadget that could do anything you choose, what would it be?
It wouldn’t be a gadget, I’d actually like to just be able to be in another country without the hassle of the travel. It would be like being beamed somewhere really quickly.
What would you say to someone thinking of joining us?
If you care about people this is a good organisation to work for because you see a lot of return for your hard work. YMCA EL is very flexible and open to ideas, you just need the drive and motivation to do that.
